i heard it gets good there long rided too. Grain Surfboards is out of there they have classes where u can make hollow balsa boards. Pretty cool class.
I went there a couple years ago. Long Sands is a spread out beach break. A lot of longboarders, beginners and lessons (I was there end of September). Produced decent rides despite the small swell and on-shore winds. My last morning there, a pretty large windswell came in. Buoys had it at like 8-9 ft. and it was a strong off-shore wind. Too gnarly for me, but looked about perfect for decent surfers. I was at a rivermouth break a little bit north of York and there was one guy out.
I used to surf Maine. It can get really good. 3/2 with boots, gloves and hood would be considered a warm temp up there. Bring your winter set up in case of a good storm. Check out Northeast Surfing.com for good info.
I surfed Higgens Beach in Maine last summer. it could be one of my favorite places i have ever surfed. its got a huge rockface protecting it from the wind too. i was there in early August and i had on my 3/2. my only regret was not having boots because i lost the feeling to my feet after an hour and a half.
Don't forget the rubber! Ya you'll definitely want your 3/2 and some booties. I used to call the Seacoast home and you only get to bareback about 6-8 weeks out of the year. We're talking August water temps as high as 65-67 in a good year. As some have mentioned Long Sands is a pretty good standard beach break, lots of room and relatively protected from winds. There is also a smaller spot just to the south called Short Sands. You have to a lot of luck, but when the conditions are right this place jacks up huge A frames like no other spot I've ever come across. It's cool just to give it a look. As was also mentioned there is a river mouth to the north that also has a large beach break, this is the town of Ogunquit, about a 15 minute drive to the north. Just watch out for all the kayakers (there are a ton). Higgins Beach, and Goose Rocks are pretty fun too, again further to the north. There are many breaks that are worth checking out from York to Portland, just look on a map, the coastline is very intricate and conditions can be very variable from beach to beach. Finally, on your way up or way back be sure to check out NH. About 20 minutes to the south of York there is 13 miles of coastline that can often yield just as good if not better conditions than can be found in York. It just seems to be less fickle down there, IMO.
I used to live right in the center of York Beach across from the bathhouse years ago, before surfing was super popular and just a couple of us out every day. Good waves, mostly suited to longboarding as the wave is real slopey and doesn't jack up. 3/2 booties and maybe gloves in Sept. There are a dozen good breaks within a 1/2 hour drive up the coast.
