Because they turn, trim better, AND.....they look kewl!!!! Chicks think I know what I am doing!!!
Truth be told....in larger surf they are faster and perform better. My longboards are for smaller surf. They mo' betta for dat!!

BUT....the Byrne has a squash tail. I do like that board; custom made for me by Mike Baron (4th board he made for me over the years) and it is one I take to PR or wherever I go where reef breaks are. The Bisssell also--for mo bigga hollow waves.

Yea... the last several shortboards I've done for myself have been round tails. My big wave board is a rounded pin. Rode swallows and squashes forever, and found round and rounded pins do better, smoother turns... especially transitioning from rail to rail. Better hold in the pocket, too... although swallows are good for that, as well.

While I agree that model names and how companies name their "technology" has gotten completely out of hand, names like groveler and mini-simmons are a type of board rather than something a marketer pulled out of thin air. For example, every board company has their own groveler, whereas only haydenshapes has a hyptocrapto

Hey Robin Hood, your arrow looks flaccid.

    Quad or traditional twin keel?

I'm not a fan of twin keels for that very reason, but my ZimmSimm was a quad and with the right fin setup I could crank that thing. Arctail with some of those slingshot hatchets and it was great at throwing buckets

kinda have my dream quiver but struggling "big time" to find a couple good hp shortboard: my local surf break is pretty weak wave, even when large, still pretty soft. do surf other areas locally that are not as soft...this area is where I have trouble with my quiver.

small surf...love these two and great for softer waves.

medium surf...love these two but the vernor is has taken a back seat. The above ci pod mod I use when its in the medium zone too. good for softer type waves, but the pod mod can handle some steepness.

large: struggle zone and have been thru a ton of boards to find that dream quiver fit..none have met the bill. Looking for thumb tail and small squash tail.
Here are my 2 current large surf boards. The chem on the left is meant for smaller surf but has a crazy amount of rocker...the other chem I won in a build your own board contest by chem...I really have no idea where this fits in my quiver.

    just bored board: never use
    [IMG]

wall art, old stringerless noll board I used when it was flat when I was a kid.

what amazes me now, everyboard I use is now below 6'. when I was younger, never had a board under 6'.

my current dream boards that I want to try for bigger surf...5'10" meat cleaver round tail and/or a 6'2" ci proton. The meat cleaver is probably not meant for extremely large surf, but I just think it would be a good fit for me in larger surf. Really need to find a magic board for larger surf...like to have 2.

Well, not exactly. There was a "first" groveler" made. And so for marketing reasons (old models sales slowed down...etc). So once the first model began to sell, all makers jumped on the bandwagon. Now....which shaper DOESN'T have a groveler model with a cute snarky model name?? It is like auto ads---what auto ad does not have surfboards in it or on top of it??? not one. Marketing selling to the masses during a fad flare up. Grabbing market share while they can. Money talks, bull**** walks......always has been that way; always will be that way. Monkey see, monkey do.

I saw a McDonald's commercial yesterday that was geared toward surfers, some dude shredding a thigh high wave on his "groveler" lol

Hey Mr Coop, I think a Von Sol Shadow might be what you're looking for. I love mine in OH-DOH waves, yet still does fine in anything down to waist high. Tremendous amount of hold with the 5 fin setup, yet it turns on a dime and still works great on the rail. goes good on big mooshburgery close outs and steep and deep, racey beach break barrels. One of my top 3 rides of all time was on one, a backside barrel at Oside Blvd that went all the way to Forester. Take it to Terramush or Blacks, when I can't decide on what to bring to the beach, I just grab that and unless it's either too big or too small, I'm probably going to have a good time

Does it mean that I am old and not "hip" if all of coops rides look almost identical to me? Other than my personal appearance I missed the short and fat surfbort boat

Good observation... In some ways, I'm sort of a purist. So my mini sim is true to the original concept, with displacement hull up front, fading to single concave out the back... half moon keels out on the corners of a wide square tail. A real "bar of soap." I like this design because it has it's own unique set of advantages. If I was in the mood to throw buckets, I wouldn't grab my mini. I like it because it's different. So when I ride it, I like to do all the things my shortboard or fish can't do.

Same deal with my fish. Aside from some slightly modern tweaks most people wouldn't even notice (not without a straight edge, anyway), it's a full on retro fish. Same with my log... not much "modern, high performance longboard" about it, unless you look reeeeaaaaly close.
