Recap, and best photos of Hurricane Bill

August on the US East Coast was essentially flat. Then comes Category 4 Hurricane Bill. An almost perfect projected path to spread swells throughout the Caribbean Islands and East Coast. So, there was a lot of hype on this swell to say the least. Perhaps a little too much, as hopes were certainly peaking high.

Large, long period swells were seen from Florida to Maine, and many areas throughout this region saw great surf. Some areas, were over called, where at one point, double O and bigger surf was projected - but not seen due to the continental shelf influence. We'll take that as a learning experience, as 17 to 18 seconds swells of that magnitude are rarely seen on the East Coast. In fact we just rolled out a great new forecast upgrade validating the forecasts, but unfortuantely was not tested in time for Bill.

Below are some of our favorite user submitted photos of Hurricane Bill. Thanks for all those photogs who shared their work. Keep them coming! To view more Bill photos, visit the East Coast Surfing Gallery.

Let us hope this is the start to a very safe, but swell filled Tropical Season. There is currently an area of convection just to the northeast of the leeward islands, that has potential to send more moderate sized SE swell to the East coast for the end of the week. The National Hurricane Center is monitoring this closely for tropical development. Read the Atlantic Tropical Outlook in the Swellinfo Hurricane Center.
