Corolla, NC:
As the NE braces for a late winter snow storm, Corolla is just seeing a cold wind out of the NNE blowing at 25 mph and very choppy waist to stomach high surf. On the beach, there is a wind chill in the low 30’s. This not as cold as the weekend. Air temp is a little warmer then Sat/Sun. If you go on the beach in Corolla just beware of a lot of sand that’s being moved around. The cross over ramps feel like the summer. Just helped to pull out a truck loaded with Rutger student caught in soft sand. That’s what we do around here! GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Yes, we are getting a taste a winter. I’m watching the Weather Chanel covering the forecasted storm that will hit Monday Night & Tuesday AM. I just got off the beach just south of the horse fence. Wave height is only thigh high w/an outgoing tide, the wind is out of the ENE and surface conditions are choppy. Wind chill is in the mid 20’s when you include wind speed & the current air temp. NOTE: WE ARE ACCEPTING RESUME FOR SUMMER RETAIL POSITIONS AT COROLLA SURF SHOP. GARY

On Friday, Corolla has a 20 plus degree Fahrenheit drop in air temp. Just as I had finished my AM surf report, a cold front moved in from the north. The wind accelerated up to 30 mph and Corolla went from ankle slappers to choppy waist high surf within a half a day. At this posting wind speed has dropped and wave height is stomach to chest with choppy conditions. Combine wind speed and current air temp and you get a wind chill in the high 20’s: NOTE: WE ARE OPEN! GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

3:10 PM UPDATE: somebody just hit the “wind button”. We have a strong 25 to 30 mph ENE wind trashing the surf! Corolla still continues to have a steady off-shore and no ground swell. Wave height is only knee cap with a select number of sandbars breaking. I took these pictures right at dead low and the tide hasn’t started to flip: High is at 6:00 PM this evening. The forecast for this weekend is for a switch in wind direction which should help to manufacture an increase in size but likely create surf chop: NOTE: WE STILL HAVE A NUMBER OF SUP’s FOR SALE. What day! Great Spring weather, just very small surf. I took these pictures at Albacore Street right after low tide. I wish we had more swell because I really like the sandbar that is right at the ramp as well as another just north. Wave height is only knee cap but we have an off-shore wind. Air temp will probably hit about 75 degrees Fahrenheit: NOTE: WE ARE OPEN!!! GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

I took these pictures about an hour ago. The change is that the sun came out. The surf is not impressive, only knee cap to maybe thigh high depending on the break. We have an incoming tide at 4:17 PM, which is not helping to increase the size. Although the wind is clocking by 10 to 15 degrees, we primarily have an off-shore: NOTE: Corolla Surf Shop is interviewing candidates for 2017 Summer Sales Positions. The off-shore that started yesterday continues today as well, but this is the ‘X’ factor. The wind has knocked the juice and size out of the swell. We are going from low tide to high at this posting. I’m just not seeing any breaks that are really working today. Air temps should be warm and the forecast is for spring like temperatures. We just need some swell. These conditions are typical for: strong SWS winds and minimal weather systems in the south Atlantic generating any ground swell. NOTE: WE ARE RECRUITING FOR OPEN SUMMER SALES POSITIONS AT COROLLA SURF SHOP. PLEASE SEND YOUR RESUME TOO: info@corollasurfshop.com

Monday is an improvement over yesterday. The wind has clocked around from the ENE to SSE and wind speed has died down. I took these pictures at Shad Street looking North towards Corolla Light. Low tide was at 8:08 AM, so we have an incoming tide at this posting. Wave height is knee to thigh which means you could dog long boarding. Besides cleaner surf conditions the wind chill that we had yesterday is not an issue today. We were all hoping we could dodge winter: whoops! The surf is rough with a strong wind coming off the ocean from the ENE! Wave height is around chest high with choppy surface conditions. The real issue is a wind chill that feels like 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Current air temps are in the mid-30’s but with the wind speed, it is just a cold day on the beach: NOTE: OUR ON-LINE SURF RESERVATION CUSTOMERS GET TH EBEST SELECTION OF TIME SLOTS. I just took these pictures in front of my home break! The wind is coming out of the ENE as well as the swell. Wave height is waist to almost chest but the on-shore wind is making conditions very choppy. Plus this AM’s air temp was 46. Combine wind speed and cooler air temps mean that Corolla has a win chill in the mid 30’s: NOTE: WE ARE OPEN TODAY AND TOMORROW. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

These pictures were taken in Ocean Hills close to high tide. Wave height is small, only knee cap high. The northern Outer Banks has a steady strong wind out of WSW blowing at 20mph +. This is keeping the sections open but also knocking down the size. If you plan to go surfing you may want the tide to go out. NOTE: WE ARE GOING TO BE OPEN THIS WEEKEND. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Corolla had a change in weather systems last night. The wind switched from the SSW to the NNW. Wind speed is 22 mph.Wave height is about thigh high, coming out of the ENE with an outgoing tide. The wind is (at this posting), is helping to hold the sections open. But if the wind clocks around just a few degrees to the North, it could turn into a side shore wind, trashing the surf. NOTE: WE WILL BEOPEN THIS WEEKEND. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Wave size has increased since yesterday! Corolla currently has stomach-chest high waves with a SSW wind that is holding the sections up. Th both good news is the air temp could again move into the 70 degree Fahrenheit range. I took theses pictures with an outgoing tide. I could see that with the 1-2’ increase in size, Corolla’s sandbars should be working. I would still like to see a little more well defined sand bars, but we are not even into spring. STAY POSTED: NOTE: 99.1, THE SOUND HAS INVITED ME BACK FOR THE 8:15 AM SURF REPORT STARTING THIS SPRING. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

We seem to be dodging the winter bullet! Air temps might reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I took these pictures as the tide was going out. I think the breaks will become obvious within an hour. Wave height is knee-cap to thigh high. Wind direction is currently out of the ESE with a speed of 10 mph. NOTE: MARCH IS HERE, WE WILL BE OPEN FOR THE SEASON STARTING THIS WEEKEND. You can tell by the pictures that I just took that Corolla has ankle slapper to knee cap high surf. We have a light wind out of the ESE and air temps might hit the low 60’s. My “guess estimation” is that the only surf might be after the tide completely drops: (2:00PM). We still have a water temp around 49 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit degrees. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP
