Weather and surf conditions are back to typical winter. Corolla has an outgoing tide and wave height is thigh to waist. Surface conditions are semi-choppy due to a wind coming out of the ENE. The combination of 50 degree Fahrenheit air temp and a 13 mph wind creates a wind chill that feels like 40 degrees. However the cold front that is impacting the upper mid west should only have a minimal effect on our weather over the next week. But stay posted, our weather can change in within an hour. We are enjoying another mild day of air temps in Corolla and we also have surf. Wave height is stomach to chest with a light wind out of the south. I’m currently traveling so I pulled my pictures off of the Duck Research Pier. Water temp is holding just below the 50 degree mark. What a day! Feels like May 1st. Wave height is thigh to waist. The ESE is adding a texture/chop to the ocean but not enough to keep you from surfing. I took these pictures at my local surf break: Carrotank/Lighthouse. I just took these pictures in front of the Lighthouse Ramp Road. Wave height is thigh to waist with hardly any wind. Water temps are in the 48-49 degrees range. Air temp is currently 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I'm traveling atthe monet but I pulled these pictures off the Duck Research Pier. I really like the pic that looks north towards Corolla. This is a nother good example of how Corolla's Coast line is semi-circular, hence creating a cove effect. Anwyay, it looks like there is waist plus high surf with a wind out of the South and mild air temps. Glad to heading back home. Corolla is starting to see a change in wind direction just as I’m typing this report. All weekend long, wind direction was out of the WSW. But at this posting, Corolla has a ENE wind picking up speed but currently blowing at 17 mph. This has had little effect on the surf: we still have Lake Atlantic conditions. You won’t be able to go surfing today. BUT, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the beach. Air temp is might even hit 70 degrees due to a warm front out of the SSW. I just took thses pictures on the North Beach. The beach is actually crowded (compared to colder winter days). The waves are very small but the off-shore wind is making for surfable section if you have a longboard. I just took these pictures up in Ocean Sands. At this posting Corolla has waist to stomach high surf with primarily peeling rights. The wind is out of the WSW at 9 mph. Th tide has just flipped, so we have an outgoing tide. As long as wind stays down and doesn’t change direction, then a surf session might be warranted for this afternoon. I just took these pictures in front of the Lighthouse Ramp Road. Air & water temps are matching each other: 46 degrees Fahrneheit. Wave high is only thigh high plus and Corolla has an outgoing tide. Surface conditions are choppy but there some very quick sections that stay open for 2 seconds. The sun is out which is helping to keep windchill down to a minium. Corolla currently has a steady rain shower which is giving us a “glass off”. Wave height is waist high but the tide needs to drop in order for sections to become more predictable. I took these pictures right after high tide, the lower the tide, the more the sections will break. Sold longboard day with hardly any wind chill. I just took these pictures in front of my home break. Surf-able but rough conditions. The wind is out of the ESE. Wave height is at least waist to stomach high. Surface conditions are choppy but there are quick sections you could drop into. There still is a side-shore current running north to south with an incoming tide. Corolla, NC:

After yesterday’s summer weather, Corolla has gone back to our classic winter reality. The wind switched last night from the SWS to the ENE. This has chopped up the ocean and created a side-shore current running not to south. Wave hight is about thigh high but I really couldn’t see any surf able section. Wind speed is 20 mpg which means wind chill has dropped into the high 30’s. Good News: we have had a very mild winter so far and H2O temps have only dropped down into the low 40’s. A winter day that feels like summer. Air temps are in the 70’s. The surf is flat, Corolla has an off-shore wind and we have an outgoing tide. When I took these pics I did see “whale spouts” and migrating whales heading north. They were about 3/4 of a mile out which is too far for me to get a good picture. Corolla has an offshore wind which is created flat ocean. As you can see by the pictures that I took, wave height is only ankle slapper. We have in unseasonably warm day, air temps arein 60s. It's a great beach day and the sun is out. It's just not a surf today. GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP
