January’s weather is more like November’s. Wave height is waist plus with well defined sections. The wind is offshore coming out of the WSW. We will call this a solid long boarding day. Water temp is still at 50 degrees and air temps are hanging at about 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Equipment of choice: longboard, 3.2mm full suit, boots & gloves: NOTE: WE WILL BE OPEN THIS WEEKEND! Decent winter surf with very mild weather. I took these pics a dead high, so you might want to wait a couple of hours. The OBX has a light drizzle which is helping to reduce wind speed. Wave height is thigh to waist but the lower tide will make conditions more do able. Air temp is in the 60’s and H20 is still in the aging in the low 50’s: GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

Corolla currently is enjoying mild air temps, rain and thigh high surf-able sections. The wind is currently off-shore but the rain is helping to reduce wind speed, hence the cleaner sections. A longer board, a 3/2 mm, boots and gloves should do the trick: GARY, COROLLA SURF SHOP

January 1st, 2017 started off with perfectly flat surf. I just took these pictures. Managed to catch a flock of seagulls waiting for rock fish to escape from the Chesapeake Bay. I just tok these pictures at Shad Street. As you can see, the surf went flat. The weird thing is that the wind (this posting), was off shore and from the SW. This usually means warmer air temps. But at this posting, air temps are in the 40 degree range. The wind is coming out of the north despite any other reports your are seeing. (Corolla’s wind direction does not always jive with other surf spots.) This has flatten the ocean and left us with a wind chill in the low 30’s. Great winter beach day bit no surfing. Corolla’s surf & weather are back to normal December conditions after yesterday’s spring day. The wind has switched and is now blowing out of the ENE. This change in wind direction & flatten the surf. The ENE has also cool down air temps down to 50’s Fahrenheit. We have unseasonable warm weather for December. Air temp is almost 70 degrees. The wind is off-shore, out of the west/southwest. The is giving us clean sections and surf that is about waist high. Our concern today is wind strength. In experienced surfers might get pushed around. Water temp is 50 degrees, so you will need a full suit, boots and gloves. I don’t know what to say? This is a shocker. Mickey McCarthy welcomed Corolla Surf Shop 21 years ago. Along with Lynn Shell, Mike Price, Rascoe Hunt and Murray Ross, Mickey was one of our first surfboard shapers. My 1st Longboard was New Sun. Mickey was also my mentor when I started reporting on the radio. He took the 8:00AM report and I would do the 8:20AM on 95.3 FM. He told me just be myself on the radio, don’t embellish your report. Beside being a great shaper, the best East Coast surf photographer, great carpenter, Mickey was a student of American History. He knew his stuff when it came WWII and the Civil War. I remember at the 1997 ESA Banquet, Julie Hume presented him with the ‘Sportsman of the Year Award” for his contribution to the ESA. 2MM RIP

Not bad for a winter surf day I just took these pictures off of my home break. The wind continues to blow off-shore. This is giving the swell a nice shape. Corolla has an incoming tide.
