Your surfing with your buddy and the landlord shows up to take your friend's leg half way up his thigh. Clean off. Well, as clean off as a shark can take something. He was pulled under and actually drowned (Don't get into details about how and how long underwater, he just did) So he is not breathing. There is a major trauma center less than 10 mins away and an ambulance should take less than 10 mins to show up. Do you perform cpr?

first, you need to stop the bleeding because if you do cpr your just pumping blood out of the body. make a tourniquit out of his leash while someone is calling EMS and then begin CPR.

did this happen or are you just saying if you find yourself in this situation? I guess we would have heard about it being you are in NJ.

I guess after you finish crapping yourself, you and hopefully everyone else in the water rushes to his aid. you get him to shore, make the tourniquet best you can while someone is calling 911.

    then call Robert Shaw.

Buddy or not I would be there in a heart beat and let my adrenaline rush do the work. I would do anything for anyone if they need help. If I was wearing a Tshirt or wetsuit top I would take it off wrap it around his leg then use my leash as a tourniquet. CPR and keep calm. If a hospital was 10 mins away I would throw him in my car and call the hospital telling them I was coming in and that they better be ready when I get there. I'm taking zero 2 a hundo.

i mean you could drive him if he was somewhat stable but if he was critical you just gotta wait it out for ems. let the pros do their magic

If it's me and another person helping, gotta tie off the leg with a leash or w/e and then load him up in the back of a truck or SUV or w/e fits him while he lays down, drive as fast as possible to the nearest ER while the other person does compressions, calling the ER on the way.

Can't sit around and wait, I saw a dude drowned at NSB a couple years ago, the paramedics didn't get there for like 20-25 minutes, lifeguards late to the spot while this kid pulled him out of the water and does his best to remain calm and do compressions.

The lifeguards finally show up and take over and then the paramedics finally get there and the dude is gone. The guy who drowned was a teacher at a local school and the kid who pulled him out of the water was one of his students if I recall correctly. Such a f'ed day that was. Waves were 6-7ft, maybe bigger, it's been a while, but point is the paramedics aint getting there fast enough to save someone who is dying right before your eyes.

I remember watching the paramedics work on this guy for like 30 minutes with no sign of life. He finally let out his last gasp and a bunch of water came out. That was that.

its really a lose lose situation.if the dude got his leg bitten off,and drowned.now your working against each other trying to help the other injury while messing with the other.u start pumping the chest, now the heart rates go a lot faster and u bleed out.drowning, all u want to do is try to get the water out the lungs and again u start breathing heavily and u bleed out.hopefully u never have a situation like that, but u never know.

The situation described has a schitt load of issues. Blood pressure is also a major concern as he will be in shock at the time if you can even get him breathing. Even with a severed femoral artery (very little time to act) the airway is the immediate concern. You hope to hell you're with others, near a phone, and that EMS is there immediately. Whoever calls 911 needs to specify as much as they can since ALS is needed and not just an EMT and a driver.

You're also doing what SUP said and calling 911 as you race the guy to the hospital. That's if EMS isn't there by the time they hopefully should get there. Remember, you're stepping out of a surf sesh with probable panic/hesitation depending on who you are. A lot of this depends on proximity to hospital. Many variables.

this is kind of what I was thinking about when I proposed the question. Because the question your left with really is .. "do I hope tying off the leg is enough to really prevent him (or her) from bleeding out in seconds once compressions start and/or the heart starts back up"...... or.... being that the hospital is so close, would it be better to let the paramedics bring him(or her) back when they are closer to being able to hook him or her up with blood?

    Would you answer the call
Or run away like a little pooswah
'Cause the only reason that you're here
Is 'cause folks died for you in the past
So maybe now it's your turn
    To die kicking some azz
