I ask because I think I may have just had a minor one today. It wasn't big today, maybe waist to stomach high, but there's an outside sandbar that caused the bigger sets to jack up and pitch. I paddled into one of those, but was really in a bad spot, so I had one of those moments when I thought about letting the wave go and at the same time paddling for it. I was in a really awkward position when the wave doubled up and I got pitched over. I remember getting spun around violently underwater a few times, while the rail of my board whacked my calf repeatedly. No hit on the head. I thought I came out ok, but had a really blurry vision when I surface, and I couldn't even lay on the board to paddle back outside since I kept losing my balance trying to pop on the board. 10-15 minutes later I couldn't even make out the coming sets. I stayed in the water for about another hour, even caught a couple more waves. But the drive home, and even as I type this, I feel a little bit lightheaded.

First time this ever happened. I know we relate concussions to head trauma like getting a bad collision in football, but I believe you can also get one when you get rocked, and even when there was never any impact to your head.

    Any similar experiences?
DUDE YOU HAVE A CONCUSSION!. I had my 1st one when I was 14, fractured my skull when I was 16, and played H.S. Football and Lacrosse . Went div. 1 in lax and played at the top club level and pro for a little while so I "dinged" myself plenty of times. I was in a truck accident this past Feb. , and I don't remember anything from Feb. to after Memorial Day and have been diagnosed with P.C.S. (Post Concussive Syndrome) I am still not back to work and can't take bright lights or loud noises. so I think I can speak to this matter:
1st-- Have you puked or felt nauseas? (spelling wrong )
2nd-- Do the drunk driving test on yourself. a)walk toe to heel in a straight line. b)(with a wall or someone close behind you) stand with your eyes closed, legs straight and together, arms "chickenwinged"(bent at elbows with hands shoulder high and elbows straight out) are you swaying ? side to side or front to back -doesn't matter. Swaying is not good
3rd-- Feet shoulder width apart , close your eyes, put your arms out straight to sides, bend your head back and bending your arms at the elbows try to touch your nose.
If you can't do 1 of them you're not too bad and should be good to go back in the water in a few days (doctor will tell you 4-6 weeks but thats so they can cover their ass)
If you can't do 2 or 3 I would recommend a trip to the E.R. and expect to stay overnight, with a visit to a neurologist in your very near future.
If all you have is a really bad headache , go to Moms house, have your wife/girlfriend or significant other, or your roommate, wake you up every 2 hours tonight. this won't work if you try to set an alarm, because if you are messed up the alarm won't wake you up, you need a person to do it and have them ask you a question when they wake you. Such as: who is the President? where do you work? what is your Moms name? what is YOUR name? what day is it? Who is your favorite team/band. I'm sure you get the idea. Tell them even if you get cranky and threatening that they have to keep doing it anyway. Do not **** around with this at all or it could **** you up for life-look at me. I was only allowed to get back in the water a couple of weeks ago and don't go out in anything (for at least the rest of this year) over waist high. Good Luck and going to the Doc/Hospital doesn't make you a ***** makes you smart
